A customer wanted me to verify that the home warranty properly diagnosed his bad compressor. We met in Raleigh at his rental home to do the compressor HVAC service. I got a chance to show him exactly what was going on with his HVAC system on Saturday so he didn’t miss any work.

First, i checked the power supply to the HVAC unit and found only half the power needed to run the AC unit. Then, i checked the fuses to the disconnect service at the condenser. I found that they were under sized and one of them was blown, so i replaced it and applied the disconnect. I found that there was no power on the contactor so i flipped the breaker. Only the fan started so i checked the compressor wires. The compressor had a short and the wires were separated.

The home warranty service is nice to have but doesn’t stress the purpose of replacing the condenser instead of the compressor. A new condenser comes with a five year warranty on the compressor. The fan motor and the capacitor will be new, so you don’t have to worry about an HVAC service call from Air Heat Raleigh for a couple of years. You don’t really save money by installing another compressor because many of them are rebuilt and dont have a service warranty on them.
